Top year for Continental tyres with wins in Tour de France and World Championships
The World Road Cycling Championships in Copenhagen capped a fantastic year of major victories on for cyclists using Continental tyres.
Tony Martin’s winning performance in the Time Trial Championships was a great reward for a rider who has risen through the ranks in 2011 to become perhaps the best time triallist in the peleton. His winning ride in the October World Champs' was done on Continental Grand Prix TT clincher tyres, the first time clinchers and not tubulars have been used by a contender, despite the lack of run-flat capability that is possible with tubulars in the event of a puncture.
A few days later, there was a lump in every British cycling fans throat as Mark Cavendish roared up the finish straight on his Competition 22mm tubulars to become only the second ever British winner of the World Road Race Championships, the race having previously been won by the legendary Tom Simpson in 1965.
Australia's first ever Tour de France win was provided by Cadel Evans (Team BMC), again riding Continental Competition tubulars which is not only one of the fastest tubulars on the market, it is the also the toughest and most importantly, grippiest tyre in the peleton!
With the yellow jersey secured, Mark Cavendish's challenge for the Green Jersey was also successful, and there were no less than 11 stage vistories in all at Le Tour 2011 on Contienntal tyres.
With Chrisse Wellington also securing her fourth Kona IronMan World title, Continental are at the very top of the sport of cycling, constantly developing new technology with the aid of these top athletes for the benefit of customers across the globe.
To commemorate these achievements, we've issued a new poster (see right) which can be downloaded as a desktop wallpaper or collected at our stand at the London Cycle Show (Jan 12-15 2012 - Excel Centre, Docklands).
